The Menten Affair - Pieter Menten & Comeragh House

Image
Pieter Menten bought Comeragh House and estate in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford in 1964. A decade later, locals were shocked by media reports that he was a Nazi war criminal who had evaded justice. Menten was arrested in Holland and tried for involvement in in the mass killing of Polish Jews in an unoccupied Ukrainian village in 1941. Hidden During the trial, he claimed to have been the victim of mistaken identity and said that passports he had hidden in the wall of of his Irish estate could prove his innocence. His plea was rejected and he was jailed for 15 years. During his imprisonment, the house was damaged by arsonists and was also raided by a gang of presumed art thieves. Winter Solstice at Newgrange - Inside the Passage Tomb

Image

Newgrange From Above

Image
THE winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and when something very special happens at Newgrange. The ancient Irish knew a thing or two about astrology, and built the massive monument in such a way that on the solstice sunlight shines through a box above the doorway, illuminating the chamber. Newgrange is just one of many sites in the Brú na Bóinne complex, with neighbouring sites Knowth and Dowth both also imposing passage tombs. Knowth is of a similar scale and surrounded by satellite tombs, while Dowth has been badly damaged by careless excavations in the 1800s. In the above video, CopterView gives us a birds-eye view of all three sites. View more of their videos here: http://copterview.ie/ TheJournal.ie is an Irish news website that invites its users to shape the news agenda. Read, share and shape the day’s stories as they happen, from Ireland, the world and the web.

Janet Montgomery - Isotope Analysis of Skeletons

Image
As part of York Archaeological Trust's Resilience Projects, Janet Montgomery of Durham University undertook isotopic analysis of teeth from several skeletons found in 2 digs in York. By analysing the isotopic values in the teeth these in skeletons, more could be established on their dietary lifestyle and their country from origin, including one remarkable discovery: two skeletons of African descent found in York, dating from the 13th or 14th century.

Isotopes and archaeology

Image
Janet Montgomery's doctoral thesis awarded in 2002 (available to download from the AHDS website: http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/a... ) was the first study to apply combined radiogenic lead and strontium isotope analysis to British archaeological humans. It explored such topics as how enamel lead compositions of archaeological humans become culturally focussed following the widespread use of metals, differential diagenesis of enamel, dentine and bone and the potential of lead and strontium to identify migration to, and within, Britain.
