The volunteer-run farm where Ireland's mistreated horses are nursed back...

Image
Deborah Kenny and the volunteers at My Lovely Horse Rescue are on a mission: to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abandoned or mistreated horses, ponies and donkeys around Ireland. "Since I've been a kid I've seen it happen," she says, "kids having horses tied up, not being fed, no water." TheJournal.ie visited their farm in Co Kildare, run by unpaid volunteers, where they take care of the horses and other animals.

Ronan Browne: Port na bPúcaí on the Irish pipes

Image
This is the beautiful air Port na bPúcaí (The Music of the Fairies) from the Blasket Islands. It was said that islanders heard a mystical music and, thinking it was disquieted spirits, they made this air using the notes they heard in an attempt to placate the unhappy ghosts. Recent thinking suggests that they were, in fact, listening to whale-song reverberating through the canvas hulls of their boats. In the mid 1990s I went rooting through some cassettes of whale song and there in the middle of the Orca (Killer Whale) section I heard the opening notes of Port na bPúcaí! This air has been a favourite of mine since I first heard it played by Seán Potts and Paddy Moloney on their 1974 Claddagh LP. It sounds gorgeous on my old 1840/50s Harrington union pipes; the regulators, unable to provide "safe" accompaniment and resorting to discord, paint a fitting seascape for our king Dolphin! This video was filmed by Fionnula Flanagan during a concert of Róisín Elsafty, Siobhán ...

GAA is ‘booming’ in France

Image
One thousand players have registered to play Gaelic Games in France, largely thanks to a successful long-term growth strategy in Brittany. ‘It’s huge’, says Wicklow-born Anna Marie O’Rourke who is the European GAA Health & Wellbeing Officer and a driving force with the Rennes club. ‘Brittany is one of the hotspots in Europe’. Speaking at the recent European Finals in Maastricht, where Rennes fielded four adult men and womens teams, O’Rourke put the success down to the ‘Celtic Connection’ and getting into the schools system a decade ago. ‘I’m proud to be part of this from the very beginning’. Victor Jallou from the Lorient GAA club also features in the report.

How to make the perfect Irish Coffee

Image
Everyone loves an Irish Coffee, but it has to be perfect – especially when friends and family are gathered around you! Here we have a step-by-step video on how to make it just right. The recipe used is straight from Foynes, where this deliciously warming drink was invented! This decadent drink was invented in County Limerick in 1942 by Chef Joe Sheridan at Foynes Port, where planes on route from Europe to America would stop to refuel. Whipped up one cold winter’s night as a warming treat for passengers who were delayed due to bad weather, the late night tipple went on to become a classic. According to legend, a hush came over the crowd as the group took the first taste. “Is this Brazilian coffee?”, someone asked. “No," replied Joe, "that's Irish Coffee." Get that story and more at the Flying Boat and Maritime Museum in Foynes 👉 http://bit.ly/2B2oG5B Always served best when in Ireland. Fast Facts: 1. The Menten Affair - Pieter Menten & Comeragh House

Image
Pieter Menten bought Comeragh House and estate in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford in 1964. A decade later, locals were shocked by media reports that he was a Nazi war criminal who had evaded justice. Menten was arrested in Holland and tried for involvement in in the mass killing of Polish Jews in an unoccupied Ukrainian village in 1941. Hidden During the trial, he claimed to have been the victim of mistaken identity and said that passports he had hidden in the wall of of his Irish estate could prove his innocence. His plea was rejected and he was jailed for 15 years. During his imprisonment, the house was damaged by arsonists and was also raided by a gang of presumed art thieves. However Menten's art collection, allegedly looted during the war, had been removed to the Continent. After his early release from jail, there was concern that he would return to Ireland but in 1985, then Minister for Justice Michael Noonan issued a barring order preventing his return. When Me...

Winter Solstice at Newgrange - Inside the Passage Tomb

Image

Newgrange From Above

Image
THE winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and when something very special happens at Newgrange. The ancient Irish knew a thing or two about astrology, and built the massive monument in such a way that on the solstice sunlight shines through a box above the doorway, illuminating the chamber. Newgrange is just one of many sites in the Brú na Bóinne complex, with neighbouring sites Knowth and Dowth both also imposing passage tombs. Knowth is of a similar scale and surrounded by satellite tombs, while Dowth has been badly damaged by careless excavations in the 1800s. In the above video, CopterView gives us a birds-eye view of all three sites. View more of their videos here: http://copterview.ie/ TheJournal.ie is an Irish news website that invites its users to shape the news agenda. Read, share and shape the day’s stories as they happen, from Ireland, the world and the web.

Janet Montgomery - Isotope Analysis of Skeletons

Image
As part of York Archaeological Trust's Resilience Projects, Janet Montgomery of Durham University undertook isotopic analysis of teeth from several skeletons found in 2 digs in York. By analysing the isotopic values in the teeth these in skeletons, more could be established on their dietary lifestyle and their country from origin, including one remarkable discovery: two skeletons of African descent found in York, dating from the 13th or 14th century.

Isotopes and archaeology

Image
Janet Montgomery's doctoral thesis awarded in 2002 (available to download from the AHDS website: http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/a... ) was the first study to apply combined radiogenic lead and strontium isotope analysis to British archaeological humans. It explored such topics as how enamel lead compositions of archaeological humans become culturally focussed following the widespread use of metals, differential diagenesis of enamel, dentine and bone and the potential of lead and strontium to identify migration to, and within, Britain.

Our legendary green lands are deepening to become a sea of brilliant red, orange and yellow. Here's a few fall facts about the island of Ireland: – Halloween started in Ireland! He's celebrated every year at the Bram Stoker Festival. – The English Market in Cork has a long history, having opened in the 18th century. Luther - From monk to priest

Image
Martin Luther came within an inch of his life during a thunderstorm. He then promptly vowed to become a monk and entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt. Explore Erfurt Cathedral, where Luther was ordained as a priest, the impressive Krämerbrücke, or Merchants' Bridge, and the charming alleys of the medieval city centre. #LutherCountry For more information visit http://www.germany.travel/luther Martin Luther once declared Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, to be "in the ideal location, the perfect place for a city". He knew Erfurt well, having spent 10 years there as a monk. From 1505 to 1511 Luther lived at the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt, an architecturally and historically interesting 13th century building that is today an important Luther site. The Bible-Monastery-Luther exhibition on permanent display in the former monastic dormitory illustrates monastery life and Luther's Erfurt years. Martin Luther, the Devil and Denominations

Image
An important and interesting look at the shocking and outrageous statements of Martin Luther, the first Protestant. It covers his interaction with the Devil. It also examines the formation of the many non-Catholic, so-called "Christian" denominations, all of which were created by men and ultimately came from Luther.

What you don't know about Martin Luther !

Image
An extremely important and revealing look at the life of the first Protestant. This video covers how Martin Luther, the first recognizable Protestant and the progenitor of all non-Catholic denominations, "discovered" and invented his doctrines by the day. It shows how he still claimed to be a Catholic at the very time that most Protestants believed he began the Protestant "reformation." It explains how he came upon his beliefs later than you might think. It covers Indulgences, and more. It shows how all Protestants are following Martin Luther's man-created religion.

Luther's formative years

Image
Martin Luther's life story begins and ends in Lutherstadt Eisleben. Take a tour of the house in which Luther was born and the house in which he died, visit the church where he was baptised, and discover the history and culture that Eisleben and the Mansfelder Land region have to offer. Lutherstadt Eisleben is one of the oldest towns in the region between the Harz mountains and the river Elbe. Inextricably linked with the life of Martin Luther, the town and its Luther sites have been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO. The house where Luther was born and the house where he died are both in Eisleben. They are among the most important Luther memorials of all and, thanks to recent excavations, provide exceptional insights into life in the late Middle Ages. A visit to Eisleben's churches is like taking a stroll through Luther's life: he was christened at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, he was a vicar at St. Anne's Church and he held his last sermon at St. A...

Dublin V Kerry All Ireland Semi Final Highlights 2013

Image
Known by GAA fans as The Gooch, Cooper won four All-Ireland titles and eight All Stars in a glorious Kerry career, adding a club All-Ireland title last month with Dr Crokes to complete a clean sweep of the sport's top senior honours. The magical forward released a poignant statement confirming the news moments ago, and it was accompanied by a very effusive few words from current Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his predecessor Jack O'Connor. Fitzmaurice, who both played with and managed Cooper, picked out one moment from his career that many fans will instantly recognise as one of his most memorable pieces of brilliance. In 2013, Fitzmaurice moved Cooper to centre forward, a masterstroke that saw his star player become even more influential as he picked teams apart with his razor-sharp passing. There was no better evidence of this than in the first half of the All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin. Kerry ultimately lost on the day, but Cooper's pass to Donnchadh Walsh ...

Winter Cocktails from Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey

Traditionalists and lovers of our native language might not like it, but it could be legitimately argued that the phrase ‘An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?’ is the Irish language phrase most recognised by people in this country. We all know, of course, that it’s a request to use the jacks that all of us would have had to use at some stage in our schooldays, but Tim Herlihy, a brand ambassador for Tullamore Dew in the US, gave it a completely new meaning in an appearance on The Broadcast, a syndicated daytime TV talk show based in Dallas/Fort Worth. Skip ahead to 3:58 in the video below… We were going to say that messing with one of the most well-known and best-loved phrases in the Irish language is bordering on sacrilege but because he got away with it and because the unsuspecting ladies completely fell for it, we’ll let him away with it.

RTÉ Lyric Fm Friday Concert March 10th 2017 (Stage)

Paul Herriott presents tonight's Friday Concert live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin. This year sees the centenary of Brian Boydell (1916-2000), one of the major figures in Irish composition. The anniversary will be celebrated by several performances of his work. Rachmaninov’s fourth piano concerto is a comparative rarity on the concert platform, the culmination of his career as both a composer and a pianist. The prizewinning Russian, Denis Kozhukhin, brings his elegant and persuasive musicianship to the work, while a concert favourite, Dvorák’s eighth symphony, with its eloquent cello melody, rounds off the evening. This concert is part of the European Broadcasting Union's P...
