RTÉ Lyric Fm Friday Concert March 10th 2017 (Stage)

Paul Herriott presents tonight's Friday Concert live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin. This year sees the centenary of Brian Boydell (1916-2000), one of the major figures in Irish composition. The anniversary will be celebrated by several performances of his work. One of his earliest works, In Memoriam Mahatma Gandhi, captured the public imagination when it was first performed and became one of the most frequently performed works by an Irish composer. It’s an anguished reflection on the assassination of Gandhi, composed immediately after the event in 1948. Rachmaninov’s fourth piano concerto is a comparative rarity on the concert platform, the culmination of his career as both a composer and a pianist. The prizewinning Russian, Denis Kozhukhin, brings his elegant and persuasive musicianship to the work, while a concert favourite, Dvorák’s eighth symphony, with its eloquent cello melody, rounds off the evening. This concert is part of the European Broadcasting Union's Premium Music Concert Season and is simulcasted by radio stations around the world.
