Flavours from the island of Ireland

Image
Ireland tastes great – unforgettable flavours are crafted using exceptional natural ingredients. From creamy butter and freshly caught seafood to gourmet creations and finger-licking street food – prepare yourself for a delicious tour around this island. Fast facts about food on the island of Ireland: 1. The grass-fed cows of Ireland produce rich, creamy butter, with a distinctive yellow colour! A chemical found in the lush grass of Ireland travels into the milk, and creates a rich colour and flavour in the finished product. 2. As of 2017, there are 12 Michelin starred restaurants on the island of Ireland – 11 have one star, and one, the Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, has two. 3. Ireland has a whole host of traditional dishes to enjoy. Tuck into Irish stew, an Ulster Fry with soda farls, champ (a creamy onion mash), boxty (a type of potato pancake) and soda bread slathered in real Irish butter. Winter Cocktails from Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey

Traditionalists and lovers of our native language might not like it, but it could be legitimately argued that the phrase ‘An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?’ is the Irish language phrase most recognised by people in this country. We all know, of course, that it’s a request to use the jacks that all of us would have had to use at some stage in our schooldays, but Tim Herlihy, a brand ambassador for Tullamore Dew in the US, gave it a completely new meaning in an appearance on The Broadcast, a syndicated daytime TV talk show based in Dallas/Fort Worth. Skip ahead to 3:58 in the video below… We were going to say that messing with one of the most well-known and best-loved phrases in the Irish language is bordering on sacrilege but because he got away with it and because the unsuspecting ladies completely fell for it, we’ll let him away with it.

RTÉ Lyric Fm Friday Concert March 10th 2017 (Stage)

Image
Paul Herriott presents tonight's Friday Concert live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin. This year sees the centenary of Brian Boydell (1916-2000), one of the major figures in Irish composition. The anniversary will be celebrated by several performances of his work. One of his earliest works, In Memoriam Mahatma Gandhi, captured the public imagination when it was first performed and became one of the most frequently performed works by an Irish composer. It’s an anguished reflection on the assassination of Gandhi, composed immediately after the event in 1948. Rachmaninov’s fourth piano concerto is a comparative rarity on the concert platform, the culmination of his career as both a composer and a pianist. The prizewinning Russian, Denis Kozhukhin, brings his elegant and persuasive musicianship to the work, while a concert favourite, Dvorák’s eighth symphony, with its eloquent cello melody, rounds off the evening. This concert is part of the European Broadcasting Union's P...
