Celebrating St Patrick's Legacy

Image
The story of St Patrick has fascinated the world for centuries. Almost 1,600 years after he first came to the island of Ireland, you can still witness his legacy today. Tourism Ireland’s latest colourful video celebrates the legacy of Ireland’s famous patron saint, as the whole island thrums with energy and excitement for St Patrick’s Day. So press play and find out why we yearn to follow in his footsteps. Happy St Patrick’s Day! FAST FACTS:  1. Today, the parade in Dublin is a huge, colourful, theatrical event that snakes through the historic city centre, with vivid displays and international bands. 2. How to make an Irish beef stew

Image
As traditional foods go, nothing says a taste of Ireland like a good old-fashioned Irish stew. Irish supermarket SuperValu asked talented chef, Kevin Dundon – of Dunbrody House, one of Ireland’s Blue Book luxurious properties in County Wexford – to rustle up an easy-to follow recipe for Irish beef stew. The result, a delicious taste of Ireland wherever you are in the world! And perhaps the perfect dish to celebrate St Patrick’s Day! FAST FACTS: – Although we love tucking into an Irish stew now, its heritage comes from necessity and harsher times in Ireland. According to The Culture Trip, stewing came to prominence in Ireland during the early 19th century, during a period of economic turmoil that led to mass poverty. With only a hanging pot, an open fire and a few fairly easily attainable ingredients, even poor families were able to survive on Irish stew. – With ingredients from SuperValu, Kevin’s delicious stew is made with beef, while others are made with lamb, perhaps with some...

The Skellig Michael Problem

Image
Most Irish people are familiar with Skellig Michael. The towering rocky island lies off the coast of Kerry, and up until the 13th century was home to a small group of monks who lived in beehive huts. You'd be hard pushed to find a more isolated and unforgiving environment to live in. In a few short years, the story of these monks was opened up to a far wider audience after it served as Luke Skywalker's hermitage in the latest installments of Star Wars. Tourism in Kerry got a boost, as more people flocked to the county. However, Skellig Michael is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors are strictly limited by number and to certain times of the year. This means only a few people can actually get to Skellig Michael, and even then weather conditions might force the trip to be cancelled. The site is also difficult to walk around, as well as may posing problems for anyone with a fear of heights. While tourism has always been Kerry's strong suit, the ...
