Luther - From monk to priest



Martin Luther came within an inch of his life during a thunderstorm. He then promptly vowed to become a monk and entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt. Explore Erfurt Cathedral, where Luther was ordained as a priest, the impressive Krämerbrücke, or Merchants' Bridge, and the charming alleys of the medieval city centre.

Martin Luther once declared Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, to be "in the ideal location, the perfect place for a city". He knew Erfurt well, having spent 10 years there as a monk.



From 1505 to 1511 Luther lived at the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt, an architecturally and historically interesting 13th century building that is today an important Luther site. The Bible-Monastery-Luther exhibition on permanent display in the former monastic dormitory illustrates monastery life and Luther's Erfurt years. The monastery is also an international convention centre. Its historical library is one of Germany's most important collections of ecclesiastical literature. In summer, concerts and plays are staged in the Renaissance courtyard.



Erfurt is a city of bridges. In addition to the old quarter and the twin architectural gems the cathedral and the church of St. Severus, a must on any sightseeing tour is the Merchants' Bridge (Krämerbrücke), the only bridge north of the Alps with occupied buildings from end to end. The Merchants' Bridge Festival, Thuringia's biggest and most attractive Old Town festival, is celebrated in June. Every year, horticultural splendour can be enjoyed at the egapark gardens.

GAA is ‘booming’ in France

One thousand players have registered to play Gaelic Games in France, largely thanks to a successful long-term growth strategy in Brittany. ‘It’s huge’, says Wicklow-born Anna Marie O’Rourke who is the European GAA Health & Wellbeing Officer and a driving force with the Rennes club. ‘Brittany is one of the hotspots in Europe’. Speaking at the recent European Finals in Maastricht, where Rennes fielded four adult men and womens teams, O’Rourke put the success down to the ‘Celtic Connection’ and getting into the schools system a decade ago. ‘I’m proud to be part of this from the very beginning’.
