Mahony fires revival as De La Salle stun Kerry

Thursday November 19 2009

DE LA SALLE College of Waterford made it to the knockout stages of the Dr Harty Cup after getting the better of Kerry Colleges by 2-12 to 2-9 at Cork IT yesterday.

The All-Ireland champions of 2007 and '08 did not have it easy, and a late deflected goal from full-back Aidan Walsh proved key.

Needing to win by nine points or more to qualify from the group stages, Kerry Colleges got off to a blistering start, as they led 2-4 to no score after 16 minutes.

Padraig Boyle got both the goals and, with Luke Fitzell playing excellently as a sweeper, Kerry were well on top, but slowly De La Salle began to come back into the game.

Their cause was greatly helped when Robin Spencer flicked a Brendan Fitzgerald ball to the net just before half-time and by the break Kerry's lead was 2-7 to 1-3.

With the wind behind them after the break, De La Salle began to whittle down the deficit and Pauric Mahony scored six consecutive points for them. DLS looked poised to qualify but Kerry were still holding on for a surprise win. But, that was until Walsh's clearance took a deflection which put De La Salle ahead by 2-10 to 2-9, with sub JP Purcell adding another point.

Nenagh CBS look set to make it to the knock-out stages following their 2-13 to 1-1 victory over a hapless Colaiste Spioraid Naoimh at Charleville yesterday. Nenagh's fate won't be known until Charleville CBS play Thurles -- whose game was postponed -- but it is likely that the two Tipperary schools will make it through to the quarter-finals.

Once wing-forward Jason Forde smashed home their first goal on eight minutes, they were a safe bet.

Elsewhere, an exhibition of point-scoring by Niall Arthur powered St Flannan's to a deserved 1-18 to 1-13 win over Waterford Colleges at Bansha.

Flannan's, led by the outstanding Paul Finnegan at centre-back, led 1-10 to 1-4 at half-time, thanks to Arthur's accuracy and a goal by Tony Kelly.

Opportunist

The second half developed in to a splendid contest as the Waterford side whittled down the deficit, helped by an opportunist goal by 16-year-old Brendan Phelan.

It took some great defending by Flanagan and goalkeeper Niall Woods to keep the eager Waterford forwards at bay, and the Ennis college weathered the storm, finishing with four points in a row by the outstanding Arthur.

Limerick's Ardscoil Ris cruised into the quarter-finals with an easy 6-19 to 1-1 win over Cashel Community School in Martinstown.

Ardscoil Ris had the win secured by half-time when they led 4-16 to no score after playing with the advantage of the gale-force wind.

John Fitzgibbon led the way for the Limerick side with 2-7, while Jamie Shanahan (2-1) was also among the goalscorers.
