The only Englishman sent to Auschwitz


British born Leon Greenman was a father and a husband living in the Netherlands at the time of Nazi occupation. Leon was unable to prove his and his family’s British identity and they were first sent to the deportation camp Westerbork and then on to Auschwitz-Birkenau where his wife Else and his son Barney were murdered upon arrival. Leon survived 18 months of concentration and labour camps and made a promise to tell his story to the outside world. A promise he kept from 1946 until his death in March 2008.

Dublin, 11 January 1917 - The Irish military authorities have issued an order prohibiting the further exhibition of a film entitled, 'Ireland, a Nation' which had been shown at the Rotunda Picture House.  The film is deeply nationalist in content and includes scenes depicting the 1798 rebellion, the Great Famine, the trial and execution of Robert Emmet, and the passing of Catholic Emancipation. Considerable crowds attended screenings of the film, which had previously enjoyed a 20-week run in Chicago where it played to huge audiences. GAA is ‘booming’ in France

One thousand players have registered to play Gaelic Games in France, largely thanks to a successful long-term growth strategy in Brittany. ‘It’s huge’, says Wicklow-born Anna Marie O’Rourke who is the European GAA Health & Wellbeing Officer and a driving force with the Rennes club. ‘Brittany is one of the hotspots in Europe’. Speaking at the recent European Finals in Maastricht, where Rennes fielded four adult men and womens teams, O’Rourke put the success down to the ‘Celtic Connection’ and getting into the schools system a decade ago. ‘I’m proud to be part of this from the very beginning’.
